Raise the Rate – ACOSS coming to South Australia

Following polling showing unprecedented support for an increase to Newstart, Youth Allowance and related payments, the campaign to Raise the Rate is ramping up by making South Australia its next destination from 12 – 13 June 2018.

Dr Cassandra Goldie, CEO of ACOSS, will visits South AUSTRALIA to continue to build the supporter base of people calling for an increase to Newstart, which has not increased in real terms in 24 years.

South Australian Local Councils have been ahead of the game in throwing their support behind the call for an increase to Newstart, with a grassroots campaign led by the Anti-Poverty Network. Business groups, unions, community organisations and economists have also called for an urgent increase.

ACOSS congratulates the ACT Government for its recent support for increasing Newstart, Youth Allowance and related payments, joining the Australian Greens and Senator Storer in the Federal Parliament.

Dr Goldie will meet with individuals, community organisations and local governments to talk about Raise the Rate and hear from people in Adelaide about their experience of living on allowances. This is part of the campaign to convince the major political parties to commit to raising the rate of Newstart and related allowances before the next federal election.

During her visit to South Australia, Dr Cassandra Goldie will be meeting with:

  • Senator Tim Storer
  • Mayors and councillorswho support Raise the Rate
  • The South Australian Anti-Poverty Network
  • National Council of Single Mothers and their Children, CEO Terese Edwards, and single mothers struggling on Newstart
  • People who receive Newstart, Youth Allowance and related payments
