Media Alert: New NATSEM research shows impact of GST increases on households

Who: Dr Cassandra Goldie, ACOSS CEO
When: 11am Thursday 5 November 2015
Where: ACOSS National Office, Level 2, 619 Elizabeth St Redfern, NSW

ACOSS will reveal new modelling from the National Centre for Social and Economic Modelling (NATSEM) to show the effects of an increase in the GST for households across the community.

The NATSEM modelling will also show what it would mean for households if the Government used all of the revenue from an increase in the GST to fund an across-the-board reduction in personal income tax rates. This does not take account of any ‘compensation’ for the GST but it intended to show the impact of a change in the ‘tax mix’. We warn that using a higher GST to pay for income cuts is a ‘recipe for more inequality’.

ACOSS CEO Dr Cassandra Goldie will stage a press conference at 11am on Thursday 5 November to discuss the findings and its implications.
