The National Rural Health Alliance has released the Position paper: Rural health policy in a changing climate – three key issues, which discusses impacts and risk factors facing people living in rural, regional and remote areas of Australia in relation to extreme weather events; impacts on agricultural output and food security; and debilitating insect-borne diseases.

The peak body for older Australians, Council on the Ageing (COTA) Australia, congratulates the 2021 Senior Australian of the Year, Dr Miriam-Rose Ungunmerr Baumann AM, who received the honour in recognition of her exceptional work as an Aboriginal activist, educator, and artist.

Nearly 6,000 bushfire survivors have received financial grants and more than 21,000 have been supported by a largescale recovery program, thanks to the extraordinary donations received by Australian Red Cross. Read the January - December 2020 report here.

Right now, nearly three quarters of Australians with mobility impairment live in housing which does not meet their needs. Many people with disability say poor housing design means they cannot visit friends and family. In some cases, housing quality is so low that people are unable to leave the house at all. Help change the National Building Code to make housing accessible for all Australians by signing the Building Better Homes petition.

SNAICC - National Voice for Our Children, the national peak body for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, is excited to announce Catherine Liddle has been appointed to the position of Chief Executive Officer. Read more here.

Major UN human rights review highlights need for Australia to raise the age of criminal responsibility

Australia’s human rights performance was in the spotlight as the Australian Government appeared before the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva for its major human rights review that happens every four to five years.

At the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), UN member countries questioned Australia about its human rights record and recommended improvements. 122 countries made close to 250 recommendations. Key issues of concern included the very low age of criminal responsibility in Australia and the Australian Government’s treatment of refugees and people seeking asylum. The need for greater action on climate change to protect human rights also featured in the review.

The Human Rights Law Centre, Kingsford Legal Centre and Caxton Legal Centre coordinated an NGO coalition which prepared a detailed report to inform the review and briefed UN member states ahead of tonight’s appearance. The NGO report was endorsed by over 200 Australian NGOs.

Latest Productivity Commission data highlights early education and care issues

The cost of early education and care is increasing, and Australian children are continuing to miss out on early learning. This picture emerges from the Productivity Commission's Report on Government Services, released this week. The report confirmed many issues within the early education and care sector, including increasing costs of early education across Australia with the national average up from $508 in 2019 to $525 in 2020.

Early Childhood Australia (ECA) CEO, Samantha Page, is particularly concerned about the proportion of children from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, remote communities and with a disability who are missing out on early learning before school. 'The children who are slipping through the cracks and not accessing early learning opportunities are the ones who would benefit the most from early learning.'

ACTCOSS this week welcomed the ACT Government's announcement of an additional $2.6 million for ACT's homelessness sector. ACTCOSS and Winnunga Nimmityjah Aboriginal Health and Community Services last week expressed our deep concern over the high rates of incarceration of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children and young people in the ACT.

WACOSS is a partner in the 100 Families WA project, which this week released findings into the mental health and wellbeing of families in the project. The qualitative research show how many people living in poverty and disadvantage are only just being kept “afloat” by support services, and some are struggling to access the “basics” of affordable and appropriate support.

In a joint media release, NCOSS CEO, Joanna Quilty and Homelessness NSW CEO, Katherine McKernan said new data from the Productivity Commission showed that NSW was failing to address the dire need for safe and secure housing and homelessness services across the state. With 'return to school' costs once again smashing household budgets, VCOSS has been advocating strongly for change. We're pushing for an increase in government funding so schools don't need to pass on expenses, but also for schools themselves to show restraint in what they require families to buy. See VCOSS CEO Emma King on Seven News here: Facebook | Twitter.

In partnership with Territory Families, Housing and Communities (TFHC) NTCOSS has developed a new online service directory, NTcommunity, to support the needs of the community services sector, NT government and the broader community to find and access human services across the Territory. Please provide feedback on usability and design, as well as any issues to [email protected].  View directory here.
