SUMMARY:ACOSS Policy Webinar - Personal agency and employment services: learning from international practice
DESCRIPTION:If governments remain committed to mutual obligation\, there is a need to ensure that people who use employment services can make meaningful choices about how they look for jobs. \nJoin this webinar to hear from Dorte Caswell\, Professor in Social Work at Department for Sociology and Social Work at Aalborg University (Denmark)\, who will reflect on how co-production has been adopted in Danish employment services\, including practices of front line staff\, and how a professionalised workforce can make services more empowering. \nWe will delve into how this approach could be adapted in Australia to give people who use employment services more choice and control. \nAs always\, there will be the opportunity to engage with speakers and pose your questions.

SUMMARY:ACOSS Policy Webinar Series: Reforming Australia's Social Services with Mark Considine
DESCRIPTION:Over the past 30 years\, Australia has experimented with using markets to provide human services. After much trial and error\, there are still fundamental questions to be answered about whether a market model can genuinely deliver improved personal outcomes for people\, especially those who experience poverty\, disadvantage and hardship. At the same time\, the search for alternative service models is intensifying along with community expectations of improved services. \nACOSS invites you to a webinar with renowned political scientist and University of Melbourne Professor Mark Considine\, author of The Careless State: Reforming Australia’s Social Services. Mark has studied and written extensively on public sector reform and service design models\, and will be speaking about the findings of his research on the impact of market models on Australian society\, their impact on the quality of care on offer\, and options for reform.

SUMMARY:Rethinking Welfare and Conditionality in Australia
DESCRIPTION:The workshop comes in the wake of a series of momentous changes to income supports\, social security\, and employment services in Australia. These include the introduction of Workforce Australia and points-based activation in July\, coupled with the recent end of the Cashless Debit Card program and the announcement of an ongoing Parliamentary inquiry into Australia’s privatised employment services. \nWith contributions from some of Australia’s leading social policy scholars and advocacy organisations working at the coalface of social security reform\, the workshop assesses the impacts of recent policy and service delivery reforms on single parents and their children\, unemployed workers\, and others subject to mutual obligations and conditionality. It also lays out the urgency of continuing reforms to properly recognise and value care in welfare policy and to address the debilitating effects of poverty and stigma on people’s lives. \nThe day is organized into a series of four sessions with extensive opportunities for reflective discussion. \nSpeakers include Dr Simone Casey\, Senior Advisor\, ACOSS.

SUMMARY:ACOSS Policy Webinar: Uluru Statement from the Heart
DESCRIPTION:CLICK TO REGISTER \nAt the 2017 National Constitutional Convention\, the Uluru Statement from the Heart was created with three key steps to achieve structural reform: Voice\, Treaty\, and Truth. \nThe next steps in the campaign are paramount\, as is the support from the community sector. With a looming federal election\, the Uluru Statement from the Heart campaign is seeking bipartisan support to hold a referendum to establish a constitutionally entrenched Voice to Parliament during the first term of office. The sequencing of Voice\, Treaty (Makarrata) and Truth-telling is critical to a new way forward for First Nations peoples. \nJoin this webinar to receive detailed briefings on the background and context to the regional dialogues that culminated in the Uluru Convention and formulation of the Uluru Statement from the Heart. The session will also provide an update on where the Uluru Statement from the Heart campaign is now\, what’s coming up and things that you can do to actively support the call for constitutional change.

SUMMARY:ACOSS Policy Webinar Series: Reducing long-term unemployment
DESCRIPTION:For years\, Australian governments have under-invested in impactful employment services\, and instead have over-invested in compliance systems and penalties affecting people on unemployment payments. We know recessions cast long shadows\, and it will be hard to reduce unemployment much further when over 800\,000 people (three quarters of those on unemployment payments) are unemployed long-term*. \nOnce people have been unemployed for a long time\, it’s harder to break back into paid work. As well as having a gap in their resume\, many people on unemployment payments face barriers to employment such as discrimination on the basis of age or race\, caring roles\, or living in a region with high unemployment. \nThis webinar will explore: \n\nNew research and data on long-term unemployment\, its causes\, and who is affected\nWhat the federal government can do to reduce it\, starting with ‘’full employment’’ policies to generate jobs\, and including employment programs that give people a better chance of picking up the jobs available\n\nJoin us as we discuss key findings of ACOSS’s Faces of Unemployment 2021 report\, which provides a snapshot of people on unemployment payments and the jobs and employment services available to them. This report focuses on long-term unemployment. \nWe will hear from people directly impacted\, research partners\, and experts on policies to strengthen employment and the government’s ‘’New Employment Services’’ due to start next year. \nSpeakers include (more to be announced in the coming weeks): \n\nSandra Elhelw Wright\, Chief Executive Officer\, Settlement Council of Australia\nA presentation from Dr Peter Davidson\, Principal Advisor\, ACOSS\n\n  \n  \n*Over 12 months – measured in terms of long-term receipt of unemployment payment
