It offers a unique Australian policy perspective\, utilising evidence-based methodologies to drive meaningful social change. \nJoin a community of experts with lived experience\, advocates\, and researchers committed to improving the living standards and opportunities of people living in Australia facing social and economic disadvantage. \nTogether\, let’s make a lasting impact and build a more equitable future for people living in Australia\, regardless of their circumstances. \nWhat will I learn?\nThis course offers a distinctive viewpoint by combining the insights of individuals with lived experiences\, advocates\, and researchers\, all striving to improve the well-being and opportunities for people living in Australia experiencing social and economic disadvantage. \nYou’ll delve into varied topics to enrich your comprehension of the primary drivers influencing poverty\, inequality\, and social disadvantage\, whilst examining the transformative potential of actionable policies in instigating positive social change. \nLearners will gain knowledge and skills relating to: \n\ntheoretical conceptualisations of poverty and inequality;\nanalysis of poverty and inequality in Australia and cross-nationally;\nexploration of the causes and consequences of poverty and inequality; and\npractical knowledge of the impacts and advocacy for change.\n\nAdditionally\, this course will explore the complex interation between economic resources\, employment\, housing\, health and broader social policy systems. It will also destigmatise the concepts of poverty\, inequality\, and social disadvantage to provide a contemporary perspective on what these issues look like in the specific context of Australia. \nHow will I learn?\nThroughout the course\, you will explore recent scholarly research\, participate in activities designed to encourage debate and discussion\, and emerge with the knowledge and skills to shape policies aimed at supporting people facing social and economic disadvantage. \nThe course will be delivered online with a combination of live sessions and self-paced modules spread across 7 weeks\, inclusive of a 1-week study break. \nThe online platform will be accessible one week before the start date\, providing pre-learning materials for participants to prepare ahead of the first live lecture. \nLive Lecture Dates \n\n30 April\n07 May\n14 May\n21 May\n28 May\n11 June\n\nAll live lectures are scheduled from 6:00pm to 8:15pm Australian (Sydney) time\, with a 15-minute break included. \nWho should take this course?\nProfessionals\, advocates and researchers working in social policy across the for-profit\, not-for-profit and government sectors or individuals with an interest in supporting their organisation’s advocacy for social change in Australia. \nWho is leading this course?\nCourse Conveners \nDr Yuvisthi Naidoo is a Senior Research Fellow at the Social Policy Research Centre. She is an internationally recognised expert on the measurement and understanding of living standards. Her research program has direct policy relevance to improve the lives of socially and economically disadvantaged people. As an experienced mixed-method researcher\, Yuvisthi’s projects have provided an evidence-base across a broad range of critical social policy issues\, including poverty and inequality; deprivation and social exclusion; costs of living and well-being. Applying these research foci across the life course\, Yuvisthi has published on ageing societies\, social security recipients\, gender equity and the status of children and families. \nDr Bruce Bradbury is an Associate Professor at the Social Policy Research Centre (SPRC). Bruce undertakes research on poverty and inequality\, the measurement of living standards\, income support and labour market policies\, consumer equivalence scales\, and the geographic dimensions of social policies. \nIn 2023\, Drs Naidoo and Bradbury collaborated on the Budget Standards for Low-Paid Families research project\, funded by the Fair Work Commission. \nAustralian Council of Social Service (ACOSS)\nACOSS has partnered with UNSW Sydney to undertake a research and impact collaboration to sharpen the national focus on poverty and inequality in Australia. The partnership monitors trends in poverty and inequality over time\, explores drivers\, and develops solutions to sharpen the focus and stimulate action to tackle policy challenges. \nAspects of this short course have been developed in collaboration with ACOSS.

DESCRIPTION:First Nations Advocates Against Family Violence are starting the Comm Prac meetings from the 12 August\, this invitation will remain open and anyone can join at anytime.  Please fill out the EOI to be included in the emails with relevant information. \nIf you are interested in the work of the Comm Prac but have limited availability to attend meeting happy for you to decline the invite but you will be registered and will receive any relevant correspondence and shared resources. \n  \nWho is leading this initiative? \nThe Frist Nations Advocates Against Family Violence (FNAAFV)\, previously known as the National Family Violence Prevention and Legal Services (NFVPLS Forum)\, is a community controlled National Peak Body for Family Violence Prevention and Legal Service (FVPLS) members that provide services across all jurisdictions around Australia.  We have a combined footprint that has more than 30 office locations and servicing over 250 communities from very remote to urban locations. We advocate for safety and justice for First Nations people affected by family and gendered violence.   \nLearn more about us here:  https://fnaafv.org.au/ \nWhat is it about? \nA national Community of Practice committed to reducing Family Domestic and Sexual Violence (FDSV) affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.\n \nFNAAFV is establishing a Community of Practice to create  alliances and networks aimed at reducing violence\, in line with Target 13   of Closing the Gap. This Community of Practice will be driven and led by Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCO’s). We understand the power of working together and the power of a united voice.  Our families matter and we need to act now.   As we learn from each other we can strengthen our sector and have an impact both immediately and in the long term. By sharing solutions\, ideas\, legislative changes and challenges\, we can work together to address family violence in our communities.   \nThe Vision \nWe envisage  a broad\, inclusive partnership with ACCOS and mainstream services at the grassroots who share a commitment to building the capacity of the ACCO sector. And to delivering on all 4 Priority Reforms outlined in the Closing the Gap National Agreement. FNAAFV invites broad participation from organisations that are committed to reducing FDSV.  We are expecting representation from the following sectors: FVPLS\, Housing (including shelters and safety housing)\, Corrections\, DV services\, Land Councils\, Early Childhood\, Health\, Courts/Justice\, Child Protection\, Disability\, Youth\, Social and Emotional Wellbeing\, Seniors and Older People\, Academic/Research\, Stolen Generations\, and LGBTQIA+.   \nWhen? \nOur first online meetings will focus on sharing between services.  Initially these will be 90 minute meetings every 6 weeks.  We’re planning for a first meeting in August. \nHow much is it? \nMembership will be free. Terms of Reference will be established to guide the conduct\, support accountability and transparency. FNAAFV will provide the secretariat function.
