SUMMARY:Rethinking Welfare and Conditionality in Australia
DESCRIPTION:The workshop comes in the wake of a series of momentous changes to income supports\, social security\, and employment services in Australia. These include the introduction of Workforce Australia and points-based activation in July\, coupled with the recent end of the Cashless Debit Card program and the announcement of an ongoing Parliamentary inquiry into Australia’s privatised employment services. \nWith contributions from some of Australia’s leading social policy scholars and advocacy organisations working at the coalface of social security reform\, the workshop assesses the impacts of recent policy and service delivery reforms on single parents and their children\, unemployed workers\, and others subject to mutual obligations and conditionality. It also lays out the urgency of continuing reforms to properly recognise and value care in welfare policy and to address the debilitating effects of poverty and stigma on people’s lives. \nThe day is organized into a series of four sessions with extensive opportunities for reflective discussion. \nSpeakers include Dr Simone Casey\, Senior Advisor\, ACOSS.

DESCRIPTION:Community attitudes are an important part of building support for policy reform to reduce poverty and inequality. This webinar will present the results of a recent survey of the Australian public undertaken as part of the UNSW-ACOSS Poverty and Inequality Partnership. We will be joined by Mark Chenery\, an expert in values-based messaging and communications and Co-Founder and Director of Common Cause Australia\, and Jacqueline Phillips\, Deputy CEO and Director of Policy and Advocacy at ACOSS. \nJoin us as we discuss not only what these results mean but also how we can talk about them to build further support for policy changes. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresenters\n\n\n\n\n\n \nScientia Professor Carla Treloar \nCarla is Scientia Professor with the Centre for Social Research in Health and the Social Policy Research Centre. Her research interests are in the fields of hepatitis C and injecting drug use\, working across different methods and disciplines. \nMark Chenery \nMark is a communications expert and trainer who works with mission driven organisations and political parties to incorporate a values-based approach to messaging. Since establishing Common Cause Australia in 2014\, he and his colleagues have trained over 5\,000 campaigners\, communicators and fundraisers from Australia and New Zealand in the science of values and framing. \nJacqueline Phillips \nJacqueline joined ACOSS as the Director of Policy and Advocacy in August 2013. From 2010-13\, she was the National Director of Australians for Native Title and Reconciliation (ANTaR). Jacqueline has a long history of involvement with the COSSes and leads the ACOSS/UNSW Poverty and Inequality research and impact partnership.

As an experienced mixed-method researcher\, Yuvisthi’s projects have provided an evidence-base across a broad range of critical social policy issues\, including poverty and inequality; deprivation and social exclusion; costs of living and well-being. Applying these research foci across the life course\, Yuvisthi has published on ageing societies\, social security recipients\, gender equity and the status of children and families. \nDr Bruce Bradbury is an Associate Professor at the Social Policy Research Centre (SPRC). Bruce undertakes research on poverty and inequality\, the measurement of living standards\, income support and labour market policies\, consumer equivalence scales\, and the geographic dimensions of social policies. \nIn 2023\, Drs Naidoo and Bradbury collaborated on the Budget Standards for Low-Paid Families research project\, funded by the Fair Work Commission. \nAustralian Council of Social Service (ACOSS)\nACOSS has partnered with UNSW Sydney to undertake a research and impact collaboration to sharpen the national focus on poverty and inequality in Australia. The partnership monitors trends in poverty and inequality over time\, explores drivers\, and develops solutions to sharpen the focus and stimulate action to tackle policy challenges. \nAspects of this short course have been developed in collaboration with ACOSS.

This Community of Practice will be driven and led by Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCO’s). We understand the power of working together and the power of a united voice.  Our families matter and we need to act now.   As we learn from each other we can strengthen our sector and have an impact both immediately and in the long term. By sharing solutions\, ideas\, legislative changes and challenges\, we can work together to address family violence in our communities.   \nThe Vision \nWe envisage  a broad\, inclusive partnership with ACCOS and mainstream services at the grassroots who share a commitment to building the capacity of the ACCO sector. And to delivering on all 4 Priority Reforms outlined in the Closing the Gap National Agreement. FNAAFV invites broad participation from organisations that are committed to reducing FDSV.  We are expecting representation from the following sectors: FVPLS\, Housing (including shelters and safety housing)\, Corrections\, DV services\, Land Councils\, Early Childhood\, Health\, Courts/Justice\, Child Protection\, Disability\, Youth\, Social and Emotional Wellbeing\, Seniors and Older People\, Academic/Research\, Stolen Generations\, and LGBTQIA+.   \nWhen? \nOur first online meetings will focus on sharing between services.  Initially these will be 90 minute meetings every 6 weeks.  We’re planning for a first meeting in August. \nHow much is it? \nMembership will be free.
