SUMMARY:Challenges in providing equitable access to health in Australia
DESCRIPTION:2:30PM – 3:30PM AEST | 24 August \nFree webinar | REGISTER \nAs the COVID-19 Pandemic has powerfully demonstrated\, there is a direct link between people’s income and their health\, with people on lower incomes typically having poorer health outcomes than people with higher incomes. Health inequity is a prevalent issue in Australia\, with many challenges due to low incomes and socio-economic disadvantage and barriers to access to health services. \nBuilding on the findings from the ACOSS and UNSW joint report\, Work\, income and health inequity: A snapshot of the evidence\, this webinar will explore: \n\nWhat exactly does the data show about the relationship between health and socio-economic circumstance?\nHow could we improve the data in order to increase equitable access to health?\nHow can the policy choices we make now help improve the health outcomes for the most disadvantaged in Australia?\nImportantly\, how are the choices we are making now about COVID-19 impacting health outcomes for those with the least during this pandemic?\n\nOur guest speakers: \n\nNicole Bartholomeusz\, CEO of cohealth\nProfessor Evelyne de Leeuw\, Director\, Centre for Health Equity Training\, Research & Evaluation (CHETRE)\nErin Miller\, Manager Priority Populations and Places\, Sydney Local Health District\, NSW Health\nNicole Kilby\, Policy Officer\, National Association of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers and Practitioners\nHost: Dr Norman Swan\, Host of RN’s Health Report\, co-host of Coronacast & commentator on ABC TV’s 7.30

SUMMARY:Webinar: Migrant and Refugee Settlement in Australia – insights from the first 10 years
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion of the ACOSS and UNSW Poverty and Inequality Partnership report\, The first 10 years: Employment\, incomes and poverty among migrants and refugees in Australia. \nThe first decade after arriving in Australia is a critical period that shapes a person’s ability to establish a secure livelihood\, participate in their community and build a future for themselves and their family. Yet there has been surprisingly little evidence about the settlement experiences\, employment pathways and economic circumstances of migrants and refugees during these formative years. \nDrawing on statistical evidence\, this research provides valuable insights into the realities of settlement during migrants’ and refugees’ first decade in Australia. It examines employment experiences\, income security and financial wellbeing\, while exploring the factors that support\, or hinder\, settlement and economic participation. The findings also shed light on how policy settings\, including waiting periods for income support\, influence outcomes for newly arrived communities. \nThis webinar will explore: \n\nThe realities of what the first 10 years of settlement look like for migrants and refugees in Australia.\nThe factors that support settlement\, economic participation and financial wellbeing.\nEmployment pathways\, income security and the barriers that can affect long-term outcomes.\nHow policy settings\, including waiting periods for income support\, influence settlement experiences and economic security.\nKey findings that address important gaps in our understanding of poverty and disadvantage among migrant and refugee communities.\nWhat the findings mean for settlement services\, policy development\, advocacy and future reform.\nThe implications of the research for policy reform\, advocacy and improved settlement support.\nOpportunities to strengthen pathways to employment\, financial security and social inclusion for newly arrived communities.\n\nFeaturing expert and lived-experience perspectives \nHear from the report’s authors\, settlement sector leaders and lived-experience voices as they unpack the findings and discuss what they mean for people navigating settlement in Australia. Together\, they will explore opportunities to strengthen settlement supports\, improve pathways to employment and economic security\, and ensure migrants and refugees have the support they need to thrive. \nMC \n\nMaria Dimopoulos AM\, CEO\, SCOA\n\nAuthors/panellists \n\nJacqueline Phillips\, Executive Director\, Policy & Research\, ACOSS\nAssociate Professor Bruce Bradbury\, Social Policy Research Centre\, UNSW Sydney\nAli Haider\, Lived Experience Advocate\nYamamah Agha\, General Manager\, Newcomers\, Settlement and Integration\, SSI\n\nWho should attend? \nSettlement services\, community services\, advocacy\, research or government and anyone interested in settlement policy\, practice and service delivery contribute to better outcomes for migrant and refugee communities. \nDate\, Time\, Location \n\nDate & Time: Monday 16 November\, 11:00am-12:30pm AEDT\nLocation: Online via Teams (link provided upon registration)\nCost: Free\nLink to join the webinar: will be provided upon registering
